WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. auto safety regulators announced Friday that they have launched a formal safety investigation into self-driving systems for vehicles produced by General Motors’ robot access unit Cruise LLC.The Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said it had received a notification of an accident in which self-driving cruise cars “may be improperly hard-braked or stuck.””Both issues are “clearly visible, but cruise vehicles are an unexpected roadblock,” the authorities said. The agency’s preliminary assessment of 242 cruise autonomous vehicles is the first step before it applies for a recall. The survey follows reports of three crashes in which a cruise car was rear-ended by another car after a self-driving car quickly braked.Cruise is offering limited services in San Francisco along with a small fleet of Chevrolet Bolt EVs.”There were zero life-threatening injuries and deaths, driving almost 700,000 miles of fully autonomous miles in a very complex urban environment,” Cruise said. There is always a balance between the scrutiny of healthy regulations and the innovations we desperately need to save lives. So we will continue to fully work with NHTSA or all regulators to fully evaluate and review potential safety-related issues caused by these two types of incidents.Commonity and safety logic of hard brake accidents” and “frequency, duration and safety consequences.”NHTSA said the issue “could pose multiple potential hazards such as collision with cruise vehicles, risks to isolated passengers leaving fixed cruise vehicles, and other traffic interference, including emergency vehicles.”The agency said it had three reports on the self-driving system of cruise cars.”We started hard brake operation in response to another road user who was approaching quickly from behind. In both cases, other road users then attacked the rear of an ADS-equipped vehicle.”Cruise said police did not get a ticket to their car out of the three crashes.NHTSA said it received multiple reports that cruise vehicles operating without onboard human supervision were immobilized and that “car passengers could be trapped in unsafe places such as lanes and intersections, which could cause unexpected obstacles to other road users.””Cruise recalled and updated software for 80 self-driving cars in September after two people were injured in a June crash in San Francisco. NHTSA said recalled software could “mistakely predict” the route of oncoming vehicles. Cruise said he decided the unusual scenario would not recur after the update.Cruise recalled and updated software for 80 self-driving cars in San Francisco in September after two people were injured in a June crash. The petition is still pending.
